This week’s reading discussed engaged Buddhism and the ethics of Buddhism. Engaged Buddhism is any Buddhist activities that are directly engaged with social issues. In the modern day western cultures, religions are seen to play a role in society, however, many people believe Buddhists to be detached from worldly affairs. In response to this stereotype, Buddhist quickly acted on being engaged in their communities. This is seen though food drives, political demonstrations, and Buddhist chaplaincy.…

In my opinion, the West has not fully embraced Hinduism and Buddhism because it is believed to be contradictory of religion in the West. This is in part due to lack of knowledge. The West believes that these religions teach you to believe in suffering and that life is filled with misery. This is not the true meaning of the term suffering. Based on Buddhism principles, suffering is when you possess the feeling of dislike, pain, or worry throughout your life.…
My great grandmother passed away when I was about eight. Other than that death has never really been apart of my life up until this year. I cannot begin to tell you the effect that it took on me. The unfortunate fact is that everyone is going to have to deal with death at some point in their lives. Whether one works in the field where death is occurring or one must experience it with family members, friends, or even pets, it is something that is inevitable. When death occurs there is a process of grieving that one shall go through, some may gain acceptance over the loss and others may continue to be depressed or still retain the anger in side resulting from the loss. All people grieve differently; some people will wear their emotion on their sleeve and be outwardly emotional while other may hold it in and never cry (Axelrod, 2016, para. 5). Grieving is a process that many individuals experience when dealing with a loss.…
In Buddhism, people should ignore the suffering and achieve the happiness in spiritual instead. “Middle Road” is the unique Buddhism teaching which is different than other religions. In addition, middle can be describing as upright and neutral attitude in Buddhism. In the process of solving problems, one should always position oneself in the middle road, and make the conclusion by finding the truth. Moreover, “Middle Road” in Buddhism also represents a unique theory and moral value.…
This is crucial to one’s life. Two years back, I lost my mother and I personally know what it was like to go through it and process that, through at the same time, I cannot fully empathize with another who has lost a loved one. I feel concerned for people who experience loss of a friend or kindred and are so depressed that they decide to commit suicides. Death or accident is a reality; one cannot deny nor challenge it. Whether it comes unexpected or one is aware of it, it is a truth that one needs to deal with.…
The death of a loved one is never an easy thing to take in. As you go through the stages of mourning, it seems to get easier to accept it. I have never gone through the stages of mourning. Shedding tears was only a temporary thing that lasted less than a minute. That is because I learned to view death as a beautiful thing at an early age.…

Grief has been both my downfall and my saving grace. No one knows how to grieve properly or correctly, but the one thing I learned from grieving at a very young age, is that grief is love; specifically, unconditional love. This unconditional love towards someone (or in my case, many people) pours out as a sign of loneliness and yearning just to hold them and hug them one final time. I understand that losing people is a part of life and can’t be avoided, but growing up, I thought my world had turned upside down when I lost the two most important people to me. Three weeks prior to my tenth birthday, my Nana passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease.…
Death is final with no point of return and extremely painful for the ones left behind to grieve. This was especially true for me when I lost my mother. Losing her was one of the most difficulty experiences in my life because I was not prepared for her death. Looking back on the situation, there was nothing for which to prepare; she was only fifty-one years old. I knew her health was not the best; however, the diagnosed health problems were not what killed her.…
The Fundamental Concepts of Humanistic Buddhism The term “Humanistic Buddhism” was raised by one of Taixu’s disciples, Yin Shun, to indicate the criticisms against the deification of Buddhism. The important features of Humanistic Buddhism can be discussed in following six characteristics: 1. Humanism/altruism Yin Shun followed his master’s idea that the Buddha was neither a supernatural spirit without leaving a trace nor a figment of one’s imagination.…
