In my opinion, the West has not fully embraced Hinduism and Buddhism because it is believed to be contradictory of religion in the West. This is in part due to lack of knowledge. The West believes that these religions teach you to believe in suffering and that life is filled with misery. This is not the true meaning of the term suffering. Based on Buddhism principles, suffering is when you possess the feeling of dislike, pain, or worry throughout your life. Life is not perfect, so there is suffering but there is also happiness in life. It is also believed in the West that Hinduism and Buddhism is just a form of meditation to make all things in life better. The Islamic religion states that “the duty towards God includes (but is not limited to) praying five times a day every day and on time, fasting during the month of Ramadan, and professing the declaration of faith that “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger.”(The Huffington Post, 2015). Praying five times a day on time can be a huge adjustment for anyone who is not used to it.
For Hinduism, westerners believe this religion to be a fantasy rather than a reality. The fact that they believe in more than one God who each covers a different realm of life can be hard to follow. Although many Gods satisfy the many emotional needs and security of man, it can provide a distorted reality for people of other religions (Flaws of Other Religions, 2015). In conclusion, unless you are a non-believer or Atheist, we all believe in a higher power. Whether his name is God, Allah, or Vishnu, there are principles and teachings that guide us in dealing with life’s ups and downs. These teachings help us to become better people while learning how to helps others. If we all took the time to learn about the various religions in the world, we would see that ultimately, there is not much
