Pt I :History of Cuba
The history of Cuba started when Christopher Columbus came to the island in 1492. After he landed the Spaniards began their conquest on the island. Some groups like the Ciboney and the Taino lived on the island but they were either killed by the Spaniards or died from the disease they brought. So their effect on the Cuban culture was small, and the Spanish culture, language, and religion lasted. The basis of the economy was mainly agriculture so that was what people did. For the first three hundred years after the conquest, the island was really ignored and only used as a stopping station for Spanish fleet.

This all added up to cause the Ten Years’ War against Spain (1868-1878). But it didn’t help Cuba gain it’s independence. The second independence war against Spain took place 1895-1898, this was the war Jose Marti was killed in. After this the US entered the war in 1898 because of declining relations between the USA and Spain. The US had economic interests there and wanted to secure a future for the Panama Canal. They convinced people after the unexplainable sinking of a US ship in Havana Harbor. US journalism blamed the sinking on Cuba. Later in 1898 the US was proven the winner with the Treaty of Paris. This helped the US because they got to drive out Spain and gain control over Cuban affairs.
One of the most important people in Cuba’s attempt at independence was Jose Marti. Jose Marti was a writer and a philosopher and is recognized as a Cuban hero. His writings critiqued Spanish rule and fought for independence. His thoughts on politics were revolutionary and he wanted to liberate Cuba from Spain. He was born in 1853 in Havana and later exiled from Cuba in 1871 for his thinking and poetry. In 1895 he returned to Cuba to fight for it’s independence from Spain and died on the battlefield that
