Breastfeeding is the normal way to feed an infant. International organizations such as the World Health Organization, the International Pediatric Association, UNICEF, and the International Lactation Consultant Association promote breastfeeding. In the United States, breastfeeding is promoted by the Surgeon General, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and the American Public Health Association
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommend that infants are exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of life, at which point complimentary foods should be introduced with breastfeeding continuing for at least 12 months or as long as desired by mother and infant. The World Health Organization extends breastfeeding for 2 years or beyond.
The short-term and long-term benefits of breastfeeding for infants, mothers and the community have been widely acknowledged and documented throughout the literature, with evidence that these benefits increase with the exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding.Breastfeeding is widely recognized as the means of providing infants with the optimal source of nutrition during the first six months of life.
