Component | Definition | Role in Learning and Development | Neurons | A neuron is known as an excitable cell that can process and transmit information through electrical and chemical signals. Neurons are the core components of the nervous system, which includes the brain, spinal cord and nervous system. | Neurons begin developing in the early stages, like when a child is in the womb. Language and early stimulation is also tied in how children will interact. Interactions on a daily basis can stimulate a child’s brain. | Neurotransmitters | These are chemicals that transmit signals across a synapse from one neuron to another neuron. Most neurotransmitters are about the size of larger proteins or peptides. |

| A dendrite grows with age, so as a student grows older so does the dendrite. When learning a new skill, this causes one dendrite to join with other dendrites to develop connections. | Synapses | A synapse is a structure that permits a neuron to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another cell. The plasma membrane of the signal passing neuron comes into close apposition with the membrane of the target cell. | This is a big part of learning as well, this cell joins with other cells and involve with learning. | Cortex | The cortex is the outermost layered structure of neural tissue of the cerebrum. The cerebral cortex plays a role I memory, attention, perceptual, awareness, thought, language and consciousness. | This plays a role in learning because of the fact, it causes the brain to pay attention and to have awareness. In the classroom to learn properly students need to have both of those factors to achieve in the classroom. | Synaptogenesis | The formation of synapses between neurons in the nervous system. Although it occurs throughout a healthy person’s lifespan. An explosion of synapse formation occurs during early brain development. | Since it provides early brain development, it definitely gets better with age.
