Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries that carry blood from your heart to other parts of your body. Blood pressure usually rises and falls throughout the day, but it can cause bad damage to your heart and cause health problems if it stays high for a long time. High blood pressure is also called hypertension. Having high blood pressure puts you at a serious life threatening risk for heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States. About 70 million American adults have high blood pressure; however, over half of those American adults have control over this disease. High blood pressure is a primary or contributing cause of death for more than 360,000 Americans every year. Unhealthy behaviors like, smoking; eating foods high in sodium and low in potassium; not getting enough physical activity, being obese; or drinking too much alcohol can also increase your risk for high blood pressure. This is especially for people who have one of the medical conditions. To begin, blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, happens when this force is too high. Health care workers check blood pressure readings the same way for everyone.
