Narrative Essay On Becoming A Nurse

On a beautiful Wednesday afternoon after school, I was able to take a peek into my future. I have always been excited to become a nurse since I decided that this will be my major, and on that Wednesday I was able to experience this first hand. At my mother’s work, Behavioral Healthcare Partners, I was lucky enough to be sent to work in their medical office. Not only did I have an unbelieveable mixture of nerves and excitement during this experience, but I also learned a lot my first, second, and third day here working in the medical department.

As it was my first day, she did not have much planned for me, especially since it would be a slow day with very limited Doctors. “You can stay up here with Rose and learn the front desk!” Jenny told me as her, my mother, and I all walked up to the front desk back to where Rose was stationed. I was able to work with ease as I told my mother good-bye since I knew Rose very well. Time slowly ticked by as I sat there with Rose for what seemed like hours. Three different patients came in, so I was able to see how to check patients in to see their doctor. Time continued to drag as I stared at the computer waiting for any possible task that could come. Finally, three o’clock came by and it was time for me to go home. As I left the building I felt disappointed because I felt as though I did not learn much about nursing, which is what I was wanting; however, I was in for a huge surprise for my second day at work, and this would change my …show more content…
Angie then called back our first patient, and we all walked down to her office. I was allowed to take the person’s vitals: blood pressure, pulse, and weight. This was a little bit difficult for me to do because to take someone's blood pressure, a person would need to put a device that almost appeared to be a watch on their wrist and this would tell the reader the patient's blood pressure and pulse. I had never seen anything like this, but it was so fascinating. The first two patients that came back Angie helped me when taking their blood pressure and weight; however, the third patient I had to find out their blood pressure, pulse, and weight all on my own.
