It is important in healthcare to look for ways to continually improve and provide the best care for patients. It is a nurse’s practice evidence-based care and to look for ways to provide better care for the patient. I find that there are certain policies in place that can be improved that may provide better outcomes to the patient. When a person is having a stroke, time equals brain cells. A stroke is caused when there is an interruption of blood flow to the brain. This interruption of blood flow deprives the brain of the oxygen and glucose that it needs to function (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, Bucher, & Camera, 2011). It is also important to educate healthcare personnel of the hospital about the signs and symptoms of stroke which would greatly improve the diagnosis and treatment of stroke. Although the American Stroke Association and Joint Commission have developed guidelines and protocols for emergency department 3 hours tPA administration within symptom onset there are still delays such as in rural communities or where hemorrhage might be a safety concern (Meschia, …show more content…
The training of pre hospital personnel in stroke management and diagnosis is essential to treatment. If hospitals are able to be alerted in advance to a person who is having a potential stroke they would be able to prepare adequately and thus increase the potential for patient survival. The hospital has personnel available to them that can be specialized in training that can help move this policy forward. It is important to implement change slowly and provide time, documentation, and multiple of in-service dates. Multiple in-service dates allows for personnel to stay current on new policies and protocol. The patient would able to bypass triage and go straight to CT. This could diagnose what type of stroke they were having and provide the physician with the option of the best treatment available for the patient. Policies are always developing and changing and it is important to employ evidence-based to stay on top of changes and strategies to continue to provide quality care to
