Being distrustful of everyone is sometimes overwhelming. People who have this trust issue in life have to be extremely cautious of their surroundings and people around them because they cannot trust anyone. The protagonists' in "Soldier's Home" and "Queens" both show their problems with trust which leads them to be distrustful of everyone around them. Not only do they show their trust issues with other people but also they show their fear or trust issues with the governing body as well. And with both of these issues they also are both ousiders. If the government is going to take another foreign child away what makes her think they will not take her away. She watches from a far as all of this is going on. Then, in the end of the poem she goes to say, "Before the first foreigners owned any of this free country" (Alvarez 1193). In this statement, she points out again how she does not trust the government of the United States. Hemmingway and Alvarez both has small details that shows their fear and them being distrustful of the government.
In Hemmingway's story "Soldier's Home" and Alvarez's poem "Queens", they both have unique ways of showing their trust issues with other people. Krebs is distrustful of the opposite sex and certain cultures. For instance, he tells the readers he only likes a girl if she doesn't talk and that he likes French and German girls, because they could not talk (Hemmingway 189).With the protagonist stating this, the readers can come up with a conclusion that he is distrustful of the women that talk because of his own insecurities of not knowing how to talk to them. In "Queens", the protagonist is distrustful of the other cultures. She says, "As the first Jews on the block, she remembered the snubbing she got a few years back from Mrs. Scott" (Alvarez 1193). In this saying it is easily seen that she was not really welcomed to the country like she should have been; anyone in her situation would be distrustful of them due to their actions towards her.
