Wes Moore's The Other Wes Moore

The Other Wes Moore is a story about two individuals with the same name, but drastically different lives. This novel’s story strongly supports the argument that you are shaped by your environment you are raised in. Both Wes Moore and his namesake were born in the same city in Baltimore, Maryland. One Wes became a combat veteran and an author, while the other was sentenced to life in prison. The Wes Moores’ lives were molded by their experiences and how they adapted to their environments. The author Wes Moore and his family moved to the Bronx in aspiration for a better life after his father passed away. His father’s death had a huge impact on the young boy’s life. Without a father in the picture Wes Moore’s mother, Joy, feared Wes Moore would get into trouble at school. Her fear of Wes’ falling into the wrong crowd made her send him to military school. An influential part of a young person’s life is who they look up to and follow. Both Wes Moore had someone whom they admired the author respected Colonel Batt and his guidance led Wes Moore to a career in the military. The other Wes Moore looked up to his brother tony who was a drug dealer that later involved Wes Moore in a robbery that lead to his arrest. Molded by their experiences, the Wes Moores were products of their own environment. In conclusion, the Wes Moores’ fates were designed by their opportunities in life.
