In one of my classes, our professor took us to the Nelson-Atkins Museum so that we can learn cultural experience of arts as one of the great resources for preaching. On that day, I was able to see a picture of the wedding at Cana. The picture was painted by the Italian artist, Sebastiano Ricci. I felt like I had be invited to the wedding too. It is so powerfully expressed on canvas. I looked like I was entered into the scene wedding myself. I heard I heard myself saying, "Wow!"
We have various Wows in weddings either in the local church or at home settings. What is yours wow look like? Somewhere we do have similar wows in the wedding ceremonies. Do you not …show more content…
2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons (John 2:1-6 NRSV). There are a lot of truths in this text, but the main one point I want to bring out from this text is this: Jesus calls upon us to obey and believe. He will meet our needs. Our text tells the story of the beginning of signs. It was very early in the ministry of Jesus. In Judea, He had enlisted these five disciples: Andrew, Peter, Philip, Nathanael, and apparently John. We see from John1:35-40, John himself does not name him among disciples. But he was together with Jesus and the disciples. He too had accepted an invitation to go to the wedding in Cana of Galilee. This is the story of the beginning of miracles. In vv.1- 2, it gives us the setting of the story and the location of the wedding. We all know that a wedding was the occasion for this story. The wedding celebration took place in Cana of Galilee. There were several towns in Galilee called Cana, but Kephar Kenna is usually accepted as the location. Kephar Kenna was about 3.5 miles …show more content…
On the other hand, Mary might be a close enough to the family to get her involvement in the administration of the wedding. Therefore, the thing that impresses me most about this story is that the events took place in ordinary circumstances. This event was not planned by the wedding party to be a stage for His activity. Jesus was simply engaged in life and met a need. He meets with us on an impromptu basis at the point of our need. He is with us in the office, in the marketplace, on the golf course, while we travel, while at home taking care of the children, or while shopping for groceries. When needs arise, Jesus is present. We do not have to set up an appointment to see him. Jesus makes His presence known for us any way. This is very encouraging to us as needy people, but we must learn from this for our ministries as well. We the ministers of the gospel and soldiers of the cross, we need to be ready to meet the needs. We may be confronted with need at any time. We must be prepared at all time to speak for Jesus. We must be willing to interrupt a schedule to meet the need before us. Mary, the mother of Jesus, came to Him expressing an unexpected problem. The hosts were out of wine
