On Sunday, 12/11/16, Bethel Community Church meditated the book of Luke. This week the sermon was about the Jesus being anointed by a sinful woman from Luke 36-48

Pastor Anderson explained how this event took place in a unique situation. " This took place In the house of a Pharisee. They hated Jesus, but this one, Simon, invites him over."

Anderson continued, "The Sinful woman was in the neighborhood. She heard Jesus was there and went with the jar kissing and wetting his feet. She must have hid and snuck in because lawful Jews were there, they would have been ready to judge her. The Pharisees were busy looking for ways to disprove Jesus, so this was perfect for them. They knew her life, so in their mind's Jesus would know hers too, if he was really a prophet, and if he knew her life, he wouldn't accept her love at all."

The issue is disbelief. There is disbelief in the pious. There are dirty hearts and coldness in the supposed clean and warm. And then we see the sinners, the non believers having everything that we lack yet should have. The sinful woman in the passage had everything he lacked. The ground was so sandy in Israel, and the tradition is to clean the feet of the guest, yet Simon didn't do it for Jesus. Jesus essentially contrasted this holy person of the time with a prostitute. This "godly" man was out righteoused by someone far far away from the father. We can have Simon's problem- disbelief in the pious. Dirty hearts, coldness in the supposed clean and warm. We can fall into this and the worldly people can be the ones that have more warmth, love, holiness while we walk around failing to express

Yet, the instance in which she addresses the Roman solider and he actually listens (whether out of respect or recognition of her authority in that moment) would have been shocking. The role that women like Old Sarah and Mary played in the novel was most certainly a foreshadowing of what was to come, as Jesus placed a high value on women and interacted with them in counter-cultural…

Proving someone loves something or someone is also sacrificing for it. In Lord of the Flies, Simon dies trying to help the other kids on the island realize that there is no beast. The beast is described as a snake, which can represent the serpent tempting Eve from the Bible. It is certain that Simon is the Christ-figure because of his actions and name. Disciple Peter’s name in the Bible was Simon.…

The mural on the side of Roosevelt Community Church depicts a man with his arms spread wide like an eagle. This mural is beautiful but very confusing. It is a man without skin whose arms are spread wide, since there is no skin passerby’s can see are muscles bones and tendons. When I first saw the mural I thought to myself, “what the heck could this possibly stand for?” I sat there staring at the mural and after about ten to fifteen minutes I still just sat there dumbfounded as to what the mural could stand for.…

Later in the story, Jesus’ disciples returned from their task Jesus had sent them on. In John 4:27 it states, “ Just then His disciples came, and they were surprised to find Him talking to a woman. However, no one said, ‘What are you asking for?’ or, ‘Why are you talking to her?’ ” This encounter and shocked minds of the woman and disciples showed the nonexistent, loving relationship between the Jews and Samaritan people.…

Society is thought of as sturdy and everlasting; however, the truth lies within William Golding’s book, Lord of the Flies. One of the most prominent truths in Golding’s efforts is where religion stands in civilization. Religion is sacred for the majority of people, but the minority find it corrupt and unsettling. The opinion of the minority is often the effect of simply having different views than the religious majority. Without thinking of the minority’s opinion, the religious majority regulates and practices spiritual values.…

She "hears" about Jesus (faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God) and makes a decision to go to him, just to "touch" the hem of his garment. It says that she "kept saying" if she only touched his garments she would be restored to health.

Finally healing was hers and she made a "confession" to Jesus and all who were with Him, that it was she who had touched him in the crowd. When we are touched by Christ, there is always rejoicing in our hearts and we have a testimony to share (Rev 12:11), and our testimonies will lead others to him as well. Aren't you glad that Jesus is willing and able to receive us all and give us the love and life we so desperately need?…

He took what little he had and did the best he could to ensure the others did not starve: “Then Jesus took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. Everyone ate and had enough” (Canadian Bible Society, Mark 6:41-42). These simple actions can all be paralleled to Jesus’ life, and therefore they all lead to the belief that Golding portrays Simon as a Christ-figure in the novel Lord of the…

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies writes about the ideas of people’s personalities and the evil within the human heart. Set within an island, a group of young boys set out to survive and be rescued; however, it is later seen how the boys end up being wild and savage when they’re left without adult supervision. Golding depicts Simon as a scapegoat whose exceptional persona on an island of chaos and anarchy makes him a target for the stranded boys’ hatred/evil. Starting early on in the novel, Simon shows a caring, generous personality, which becomes a stigma that he is “unique” in comparison to the other boys. Even though the norm for the biguns on the beach was to ignore or not help the littluns; Simon was different in that, “Simon found…

Simon as a Christ Figure Anna, a Disney character, sacrificed herself for her kingdom and sister. She is archetypally used as a Christ- like figure in the Disney movie, Frozen. Authors often connect characters or actions to broader ideas, such as Christ- like figures. In many works of literature, archetypal characters, situations, and symbols are used to understand the motives behind a character 's actions or personality. William Golding portrays Simon as a Christ figure archetype in Lord of the Flies because he is selfless, encounters the devil in the wilderness, and comes to redeem an unworthy world, but is killed by those he wishes to save.…

While the man was on the road, he was beaten by robbers to the point where he could not get up and walk. While he was lying there, a priest passes him by without offering any help, and so did a Levite. Jesus seemed to have been challenging the religiousness of the two religious groups, by implying that they put their righteousness rituals before the well-being of others who they are supposed to love. The specific implications were that the priest and the Levite were unwilling to become unclean by touching a dead body, or blood, therefore they would not want to touch the man who was hurt. The third man who passed the beaten man was a Samaritan.…
