Bed bugs have similar engorgement characterizes as many other bugs when it comes to the sodium solution concentrations. When offered only water versus when a solution that contained phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), the later was what was found to be the situation where more engorgement occurred. It was expressed that mouthparts that bring about the acceptance of different concentrations of sodium chloride are receptors known as gustatory receptions. In the instances lower sodium was engorged and high sodium was rejected. When considering the characteristics of bed bugs with other bugs, there was a better consumption of low sodium chloride concentration than higher levels.
Discovering what concentrations of solutions most are consumable to bed bugs and also determining the functions, locations, and structures of the receptors may be of great value. The ultimate goal is to

They were fed rabbit blood that was kept at a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius. This temperature was maintained because the blood was immersed in a water bath that circulated. The membrane that was used for the blood to be sucked through was a parafilm-membrane. The selected bugs were kept at a controlled humidity and temperature. These bugs were tested at different stages of life as listed: species of both male and female adults and nymphs that were at third and fourth phase of molting. This occurred 7 days from emergence and they had not eaten.
Solutions and chemicals were obtained from states such as Missouri and Illinois. There were multiple chemicals in the tests that were assessed at different concentration levels. Some of the other additives were glucose, cholesterol, bovine albumin and globulin, eight different vitamins and a total of nine amino acids. The formulas for concentrations were created based on what would be in blood normally. Solutions were composed new prior to each

    The once hot water under the warm chamber began to cool off after a few minutes, while the ice under the cold chamber began to melt. These influences may have changed which chamber the pill bugs chose or changed the temperature of the chambers themselves.
