Pillbug Lab Report

The objective of the Isopods Lab was to figure out if the Pillbugs favored the wet environment or a dry environment. After reading the pre-lab report on Pillbugs, my hypothesis was that “If water is added to an Isopods environment, then the isopods will favor the wet environment.” By using two groups of Isopods, one group was put into a dry environment and the other had one drop of water into their dish. After ten minutes of observing the Isopods, the results showed that the Pill Bugs prefer the wet environment more. As time went on, the bugs in the wet environment survived longer than the Isopod in the dry environment. As shown on the graph, the red line indicates that after nine minutes there were six Isopods left in the wet environment,

This experiments purpose is to study the effects of manmade chemicals on daphnia. By observing 2-3 daphnia in 4 different environments I rated each Daphnia magna on a scale of 0 to 5 on how it affected their health. I averaged each of the daphnia’s heath based on their behavior and apperence. One pure water, then three other environments exposed to antifreeze, pesticides, and cigarette ash. After observing each environment for 30 minutes I discovered that cigarette ash is the most toxic to daphnia I rated their health at a 0 and antifreeze is the only chemical I tested that didn’t result in death I rated the daphnia exposed to antifreeze at a 2 due to the change in appearance and downfall of health .…

Our chi squared test, shown in table 1, confirms our analysis of our results because we concluded that our p value was between 0.9 and 0.5. This means that we cannot reject our null hypothesis which was that the pill bugs would not have a preference for either the light or dark chambers. The mean for number…

Our experiment required a few steps. The first step was to collect at least three pill bugs outside, which live under leaf litter, and put them into a small, plastic container. When we got inside,we took a two compartment choice chamber and put filter paper on the bottom to see the bugs more clearly. Then, we randomly selected one of the pill bugs and put it to the rightmost of the choice chamber. Then we played either classical or heavy metal music at 14 volume on an iPhone 6 for two minutes.…

Introduction For this lab, we were given two unknowns that we had to identify. One of the unknowns was live, meaning that we had to use morphological and biochemical methods to understand and discover what the organism was; and the other unknown was a digital unknown, that was identified through the genetic method, where we had access to a file with a DNA sequence and had to decode through a website that was given to us by the professor. We were given three milestones that we had to complete, two were naming our unknowns, and one was naming the arrangement of the unknowns. To complete these steps, we needed to work independently, using the skills that we learned in class to figure out our unknowns. Identification of Unknown Using Morphological…

The focus of this lab was to identify an unknown organism based on its characteristics and the results from each of the tests. There will be various of test to choose from in order to identify the unknown organism, which will eliminate numerous possibilities and narrow it down to one. All the fundamental skills that we have learned and practiced in the lab will be used to perform on our unknown such as aseptic technique, microscopic examination, the use of differential media, and determining if it’s positive or negative. Performing aseptic techniques is the most crucial step that requires the utilizing of transferring, inoculating, and storing bacterial cultures and media. Aseptic technique is defined as procedures that prevent contamination…

To determine the unknown’s morphology is the first step in narrowing down possible organisms. A MacConkey and Mannitol Salt Agar tests were conducted on the organism and revealed the following. No growth on the MacConkey plate resulting in a gram positive bacteria and the Mannitol Salt Agar result showed it could be Staphylococcus or Micrococcus. (1) A gram stain test was used in determining the shape, size and arrangement of the unknown bacteria (1). The unknown organism is heat fixed onto the slide, in order for the organism to be stained.…

While we consider our results to be valid, there is still room for improvement. For example, in the light treatment, the mechanism where we placed the tube could not be adjusted to eliminate room bias. Another way to increase the validity of the results would be to avoid any spills and loss of A. franciscana during the counting process. Further investigation in this subject might cover how the feeding habits of A. franciscana are affected by different abiotic and biotic factors. Another investigation in this subject might cover the influence of biotic factors in the habitat selection of A. franciscana, as we saw that predation, a biotic factor, had an effect in the light…

In future study, a more commonly used pesticide could be tested on these small water invertebrates because if the pesticide we used in our experiment have the abilities to disrupt the normal activities of Daphnia, then more question can be raised about its impact on human. From our sample size, at least 30 daphnia died within half an hour after being exposed to Atrazine and 24 were immobile with their pigment changing from normal to a whiter color as they die off. Leromina et al. (2014) observed similar result s, but suggest that the effect of pesticides on aquatic invertebrates are more physical, rather than behavioral since it effected their…

For our experiment, we followed instructions very precisely. Each vial had a different amount of saline so that we could see the effects on the duckweed. Our duckweed was placed under a light for quite a while. In the beginning, we checked the growth of our duckweed every day and as we got further and further in we checked less and less. Once we reached carrying capacity we stopped collecting data and performed a difficult math equation to figure out the rate of growth.…
