Attentive Listening

I was drawn to this class because I’ve always been interested in the helping profession ever since I was young. Being able to make a positive impact on someone’s life is very important to me because it satisfies my personal need of wanting to make a difference in people’s lives (Corey, 3). The important people in my life such as my mother, aunt, and boyfriend have made impacts on my life during times of difficulty and struggle that I would also want to reciprocate to others. Their words of encouragement, understanding, and attentive listening skills have helped me more than my own methods of overcoming the situations. As a result, I look up to them and aspire to be able to do the same for someone else in the future.
I decided to take this introduction course on counseling to see exactly what the field had to offer and what it takes to become a professional in this field. My attentive listening skills and genuineness are a couple of aspects of my identity that I feel fits well within this field. These traits are similar to the ones portrayed in the textbook’s portrait of the “ideal helper” (Corey, 13). One

I have two more years of my undergraduate program and plan to attend a two to three year master’s program in the field. After that, I expect to take anywhere from two to three years to complete my supervised hours of internship until I can become officially licensed. I expect the field to be somewhat challenging for me because I tend to be a quiet person unless I am in an intimate, small group setting. This trait could be problematic in group therapy settings but would be perfect for one on one counseling. I have noticed this aspect about myself because I naturally do not speak out very often while I am trying to listen to someone unless I have something very important to say or feel strongly about the

My perception of a counselor role when I first entered the mental health counseling program at Touro back in 2013 was with a supporter of the mental illness came the awareness of the importance of counseling as a practice of treatment. During my journey, I discovered that counseling may be challenging as it needs to be individual detailed. What works for one individual may or may not work for another. Whereas “finding counseling” has felt like a very lengthy progression already, I know that the development of “understanding counseling” has just begun in my new found career. I strongly believed that mental health counselor in today’s society is here to help individuals with a wide range of mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety, eating…

As I read through the first section of the book "Helping Skills", I found two things that stood out above the rest. The first was self-awareness and the second was cultural awareness. Self-awareness goes deeper than the surface and explores the beliefs and feelings of oneself. Where cultural awareness is knowing and understanding those around you. Both are extremely beneficial and needed by one another, especially in the process of counseling.…

From my interview with Donna Portnoy and what I was taught in the course, I comprehended that each school graduation process is different. One school may allow you to graduate without taking hours on an internship, while other school may make it a requirement. Walden University incorporates a Counseling Practicum and two Counseling Internships in your course completion requirements. I’ve learned that throughout the Profession of Mental Health Counseling in whichever career you pick your counseling techniques will be different in the population of people you serve. In contradiction to what I was taught in the class and the Interview I understand that topics presented to be in this Introduction to Mental Health Counseling course.…

When watching this video it was interesting the facts he presented on communication, listening is 60% and that we only retain 25% of a listening when we do communicate. It’s also interesting that our listening is also made up processing sound and distinct pattern such as the sound of our name or hearing a distinct sound pattern. Also hearing distinct noises for about 2 mins we will stop listening to. Listening to music as my study is one way to listen to a sound pattern or distinct sound is what I interrupted as one of the things he was speaking of in this video.…

Listening is one of the most important characteristics of effective communication. A successful listener does not just understand the words but also understand how the speaker feels about (Robinson and Segal 2015). An effective listening can make the speaker feel heard and understand, in which it could also help to build a strong and deep connection between project team and leaders. It could also create an environment where everyone feels safe and comfortable to express their ideas or feelings to solve problems. In addition, it could also help to save plenty of time by helping both leaders and teams to clarify problems as well as avoid conflicts and misunderstandings (Robinson and Segal 2015).…
