Interpersonal Helping Skills Project
Being vocally engaged is a big part of becoming a counselor. I, however am trying to master being for vocal with others. This goal can obviously not be achieved right away. It will take me some time to achieve my goal. Also, I am also trying to achieve another goal, listening to the client rather than thinking of my question.
I know I am not a vocal person. However, I am more vocal when I’m not in an academic setting. But, I am able to connect with clients from my job. So, on October 14th I took the opportunity to be a participant in the fishbowl. My main goal during this activity was to be more vocal than I usually am.
Going into the fishbowl II had zero knowledge of what I was getting myself into, I

A really big flaw of mine is, thinking of questions while people are talking to me. It’s good to have a sense of what you might say next but, I get lost in people’s conversations thinking. In a way, I also am an over thinker. Because when the person is done talking, I know exactly what to say. However, I think over think the idea of my question not being “good enough” or not “fitting” with what the person told me. One of the main reasons I consistently think of what I should be asking later, so I can be more vocal. I feel as if not thinking hard on my questions, intertwines with being vocal. I feel as if I want to be more vocal, I need to think of questions to ask next. This is not what I should be doing. I had to put a stop to thinking if I want to be more vocal, then know the question right away. So, I started focusing on my questions first. When I first started, I used my roommates as practice dummies. I would stop my roommate before she started telling me her story for the day, and say, “You do not need to be thinking of questions, everything will come naturally.” After the first time I had tried this, well I felt so weird. I only felt weird in the sense that I had to put my roommate’s day on hold so I could tell myself to focus. I also started doing this at work too. If the clients were not around, I would think, “Okay, when they start asking questions it’s perfectly normal to wait a couple seconds before giving them a direct answer.” After a couple weeks of consistently stopping myself, it just became a habit of mine. I can sit and listen to a conversation without always having to have the question right away. However, I still find myself from time to time thinking of a question that can be asked. But, it’s just me pushing to be more

Reflecting feeling: This is a skill that I have a hard time with because I cannot describe my own feelings. It is going to be hard trying to describe the feelings of the client. During a session, I do not want to say the wrong feeling and the client gets upset with me. I want to learn how to reflect multiple feelings besides just looking at the body posture. I would have to listen very closely to what the client is saying while paying attention to other mannerism if I want to achieve this.…

It is okay for me to ask others for help because they know what I am going through, they have been there and overcome not having any self-confidence in the beginning stages of counseling in therapy group settings. Since I have a hard time staying focused on speeches this is a part of this style of learning that doesn’t fit me very well. To learn better in the “Feeling” category I would need to be more comfortable with abstract ideas and emotions more than facts and logic. Plus I would need to learn how to be friendlier with classmates so that we could continue the topics outside the classroom. That’s a little…

Ahead of me is alot of work to do to get them out of my vocabulary especially when speaking in public. They are um and yeah. When I lose my train of thought or searching for the right words, I tend to say those words to stretch the time and to avoid the ackward silence. I do not have a tip of how to stop, I feel the more I speak, the more comfortable I have become so those words are being said a little lesser each time. Another issue that makes me nervous, the fear of being asked a question that I would not know the answer to.…

However, this pessimism needs to be well managed, lest it turns into paranoia. It is also a problem when it comes to group work as some people may feel offended when I overly point out imperfections in their opinions and ideas. Another weakness is communication. I am able to absorb and understand information quite readily but I face difficulty when it comes to communicating such information to my peers. Many times it seems as though we are on a different wavelength and it is vexing for both parties as I cannot express what I want to say and the other party cannot understand what I am trying to say.…

I want to be able to share them, but I feel uncomfortable sharing because of my fear of being judged on my work. Not just grammatically or structurally, but meaning-ness and their debatable ideas. When it comes to trying to resolve them I just keep the rest of the story in the back of my mind. Yet I instead pull my hair out because I can’t finish work like…

Furthermore, I learned through out this module how much listening is important as a counsellor and how it is on of the biggest skills that i would need as an youth worker. As I counselled, It became evident to me that when I would stop paying attention for a short while I would stop the counselling session as I would cutting off the person I was counselling. During these sessions I would not be able to know get the grasp on when I was meant paraphrase or reflect back the feelings, however i soon realised that this was my fault as i would start to think about irrelevant stuff. Nevertheless, when i noticed that i was not giving my all to the task and when I realised this I tried my hardest to pay attention to the sessions. Due to this reason I became aware of if I was to be counselling a young person, I would have not only made them stop expressing themselves as…

As the counsellor I felt I had to keep speaking because awkward silence was a sign that I was not doing my job properly. I similarly found myself trying to find a solution for my client. I was more focused on what question I was going to ask next and how I would respond then the topic my client was talking to me about.…

Because listening is our access to understanding, if we don’t pay enough attention to the message being portrayed, it will ultimately be lost. While we listen consciously, that creates understanding, so that way we can better understand important events happening around us. A world where we do not listen to each other at all is a very scary place. I am guilty of spending most of my time contemplating and formulating responses in my head rather than listening to the other person during a conversation. The pressure of avoiding silence is too great for me, so I start creating responses in your head, but by the time I think of something interesting to reply with I realized that I missed a good portion of what that person just said.…

You are attempting to change your listener’s attitudes, beliefs, or actions, and are trying to get them to agree with you. When you are speaking on controversial topics, this becomes even harder to accomplish, as people can be dead set in their ways. 2.) You must set realistic goals for your speech and realize that not everyone will be persuaded. There is usually a resistance on the listener’s behalf to what you are saying.…
