American Politics is a battle ground for many different viewpoints for varying topics. Planned Parenthood is one of the topics that is surrounded by controversy and arguments. Whether Planned Parenthood should be government funded is the debate that takes place often. Planned Parenthood advocates for women’s rights for abortion, birth control and health care equality (Planned Parenthood website). Even though Planned Parenthood does not have any government funding exactly, they do take Medicare, which is a government program. Many people are under the impression that the government provides direct funding to this health center, but it is simply not true. The issue of Planned Parenthood falls under the debate about abortion since some of the clinics provide the medical procedure. Planned Parenthoods main objective is to provide preventive care to help prevent unintended pregnancies, to help screen for cancers and reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections. (Planned Parenthood Website) Planned Parenthood runs on an individual’s ability to afford healthcare, which is another topic widely debated in our government. Without any sort of assistance to patients from the government, Planned Parenthood would simply be unable to run. Planned Parenthood has become a widely discussed topic under the new Trump administration and the fight for women’s rights in the healthcare sector and in general have become a large movement. Those against planned parenthood are looking to defund the program. Although the government does not fund the program directly, it does so through Medicaid. As part of the Hyde Amendment, Medicaid cannot be used for abortions, except for certain circumstances. (Business Insider) This way people would not be able to afford abortions, therefore preventing them. This would also prevent 2.5 million people from accessing services by Planned Parenthood who rely on Medicare. The other side of Planned Parenthood, those for it, believe that defunding it would cause a “national health disaster.” (Business Insider) Sexual health is extremely important for all to learn and for many Planned Parenthood is the place they have access to preventative measures of all sorts. Republicans are taking the stance to defund planned parenthood through the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
