In 2007, Congress considered a bill that included strengthening border enforcement; granting legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants in the U.S.; providing a way to apply for citizenship; establishing a two-year guest worker program; and changing the criteria for legal immigration. But, the opponents of these provisions turned down the bill. Today, immigration laws keep immigrants undocumented longer. Immigration policy is a responsibility of the federal government and the only way to reduce the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. is to control it at the border. One of Trump’s campaign promises was to secure the U.S.-Mexico border by building a wall and making Mexico pay for it which would cost between $5 billion to $10 billion.
