Resolved: The United States Federal Government ought to pay reparations to African Americans.
Before we begin today judge I will be presenting one observation for this round: PF debate is a logical, cause and effect debate, we use numbers, statistics, and clear sighted logic in our debate rounds, too common we have found while debating this topic, people have a tendency to argue what is morally right or permissible, we however know that philosophical, moral debate is LD debate, and has no place in a public forum round. Slavery has a lasting effect on African American communities today. Today, in America 37.1% of African American children (Under 18) are in poverty in comparison to only 12.3% of white children being in poverty according to census statistics[1]. Cyclical poverty because of slavery is a large issue because of the ramifications the enslavement holds to this day. African Americans have an over 200% higher poverty rate among blacks over 18 in comparison to whites[1]. Another reason why African Americans have been held back due to the fact they can't afford higher education as often as their white counterparts. According to the 2015 Gallup-Purdue index report, African Americans have the highest rate of college debt accrual among any race[2]. Many African Americans are dissuaded from attending college in regards to the idea that they will not be able to afford it. Providing reparations in the form of education grants could help push African Americans to be able to take on high wage jobs. Along with a possibility of tax cuts as a form of reparations as it would greatly benefit the African American community without imposing a direct financial burden upon the Federal Government. As previously mentioned, reparations, in the form of education grants, would better equip African Americans to take on high wage, positions of impact to better influence our society as a whole. The United States Federal Government would be investing in the United States' human capital which would enhance the overall economic power of the United States. Along with the grants relating to college, reparations could be paid in the form of a school supplies stipend to per-collegiate African Americans as it could greatly benefit young African Americans and their families to be able to lower the financial burden that is bestowed upon African Americans. According to an annual survey conducted by Huntington Bank, the cost of necessary school supplies and activities has risen 85% for elementary school students ($649), 78% for middle school students ($941), and 57% for high school students ($1,402) since the survey began in 2007 [4] which, among poor families can be a major strain on their finances. This stipend overall would work to better equip our African American youth to positively influence the economy and strengthen the United
