Bad Side Of Animal Testing

Superior Essays
Animal testing is a hot button issue that has arisen in recent history. It has many uses in this day and age. These uses include testing for household products, cosmetic products, and medical research. Many species of animals are used in these tests ranging from mice and rabbits, to dogs, cats, and chimpanzees.Without a doubt, testing on animals does come with some benefits, such as the advance of medicine and science, and a way to test the safety of the products we use before they are released to the general public. Animal testing is not all positive however, there is an ugly side to testing. Such as the debate as to whether it is ethical to test on living beings, and whether or not the tests that are performed on animals should be done. …show more content…
The most important point of this argument is that animals “do not have the cognitive capabilities of humans and also do not seem to possess full autonomy” (Liou). Because animals do not have the cognitive capabilities of humans or the autonomy, it is argued that they do not need full human rights because they would not benefit from having all of them. This does not mean that animals should have no rights, but it opens up the door to researchers and scientists who want to test on animals. It is also argued that if we are giving rights to lab animals, why would those rights not also go to farm animals? The food industry kills millions of pigs, cows, chickens, etc. The farm animal topic has also been used to argue that if it is okay to kill animals for food, then it should be okay to test on animals since they both have benefits that help humans (Rowan). Even though scientists are the ones performing tests on animals, they have a similar view on animal testing as the general public, and that happens to be somewhat ambivalent. Some scientists describe feeling guilt after performing tests on animals, not only immediately after, but sometimes for years, which is why the scientific community does not accept animal testing universally as many seem to think …show more content…
However, there are scientists that do not agree with animal testing. It turns out scientists are only marginally more supportive of animal testing than the general public. This is because when it comes to animal testing most people look at the issue “with their hearts rather than their heads” (Rowan). This is why some will be in favor of testing on animals such as mice and rabbits, but not cats and dogs. Those who are in favor of animal experimentation would agree that animals should be ensured the best treatment when being tested on, and to keep them in clean disease free environments. Other precautions that could be taken to reduce the amount of animals used in test is to only use them when there is no information on what is wanted to be tested, and to try and use less complex

Testing on animals is also a lot more expensive and non-practical than alternative methods. (Animals In). “Some people, including some scientists object to the practice strictly on ethical and moral grounds, refuting or rejecting any scientific evidence that animal testing is helpful to humans.” (Judson 12). However, groups opposing the cruel treatment of animals were influential in getting regulations passed to protect welfare of animals.…

“If you want to test cosmetics, why do it on some poor animal who hasn 't done anything? They should use prisoners who have been convicted of murder or rape instead. So, rather than seeing if perfume irritates a bunny rabbit 's eyes, they should throw it in Charles Manson 's eyes and ask him if it hurts,” said comedian Ellen DeGeneres in My Point... And I Do Have One, her humorous reflection on her life. Though Ellen DeGeneres makes a hyperbolic point, she questions the ethicality of animal testing.…

For most people there are two scenarios that come to mind when they hear animal testing. The first scenario is that scientist are torturing, neglecting and abusing the animals that are being tested on. The other scenario is that scientist are being ethical, take care of the animals and are creating life-saving medicines. This makes the use of animals in experiments a controversial topic; a topic that isn’t quite black and white when argued. There are different types of animal testing like, medical testing and cosmetic testing; one is more ethical than the other.…

Oliveira 1 Animals should not be used for scientific or commercial testing because animal testing is cruel and inhumane, alternate testing methods are available, and because humans and animals are every different from each other making animals very poor test subjects. Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC (Animal Testing Pro & Con). Scientist use animals for many different purposes. Animals are used to test the effectiveness and safety of new drugs before those drugs are given to people to treat illness and disease. Animals can also be used as test subjects for products like lipstick, eyeshadow, contact lens solution, and shampoo (Hayhurst, 26).…

Animal Testing The issue of animal testing has been a topic for heated discussions for the recent years. It is necessary to point out that humans and animals have significant biological similarities which make it possible for the scientists to predict human's reaction to certain chemicals, cosmetics, and medicine . There are three major areas of animal testing including biomedical research, animals test using, and the cost of animal testing The first major area of animal testing is biomedical research. Animal testing is that during the process of biomedical research animals are kept in captivity or can even be killed.…

The testing on animals is a very touchy subject. It makes people wonder whether or not its cruel to advance technology by killing innocent animals. Killing animals for testing has its benefits but it's still inhumane to do that to animals. It can destroy populations of animals if tested often and if every lab has its own supply of animals the populations will drop by extreme numbers. The animals that are tested on often get terrible treatment as the people testing on them know they will soon die.…

The scientific community is strongly in favor of animal testing. They see humans are superior to animal life and this belief thus justifies the use of animals in testing. The medical breakthroughs that have occurred as a result of animal testing are also considered reason enough to continue the practice. Support is also geared at protecting humans, not simply producing new life-saving drugs-although this is seem as a priority. Animal testing is a important part of preventing a widespread disaster if chemical agents are released by another country.…

Having been given a boost by the Silver Springs Monkeys case, animal rights groups now protest against testing done on animals more hotly than ever (Perdew 6-16). People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the other extremists views line up with evolution. If mankind is no different than animals, then it would be wrong to test things on an animal that could potentially kill it. Extreme animal rights activists have been known to say absurd things such as: “A rat is a pig is a dog is a boy.” (Ingrid Newkirk, founder of PETA).…

Therefore, scientific and commercial testing on animals within a government regulated and inspected facility provides humane testing for biological advancements. Animal testing includes experiments on mice, rats, cats, dogs, monkeys and much more animal species for cosmetic use. Despite that it might help with new discoveries in science, animal testing is a form of abuse that no animal should have to undergo. After studying multiple views on animal testing I have come to realize my personal view has now changed since the start of my research. Before undergoing heavy study into animal testing I believed that all types of animal testing should be stopped, but now I believe that the idea is very beneficial and should only be done when the rights of the animal are considered. In the coming years, hopefully, more regulations can be passed to ensure that all animal’s lives are protected during experimentation. Although most animals are treated with care and no pain is dealt to them when undergoing testing, it would be a lie if I stated no animals are harmed during the process. Animal testing is extremely useful in developing life-saving drugs and medicine.…

Though I concede that in some situations, animal testing may be useful, such as in immensely important medical studies, I still maintain that it is unnecessary to make an animal suffer and be discriminated against. Although some people may think that animal testing is healthy and beneficial to humans, I believe that animal testing is unethical and utterly wrong because of the unfair repulsive treatment that animals receive from scientists. This topic is important because the world we live in is as much an animal 's world as it is a human’s world and right now humans are discriminating and enslaving…
