Should We Stop Animal Testing Necessary?

Improved Essays
Animal testing has always been a controversial and emotive topic. Each year, millions of innocent animals suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests, as well as in biology lessons, medical training exercises, and curiosity-driven medical experiments at universities (“PETA Makes Its Case Against Animal Testing” 3). Think of any drug, cosmetic or household cleaner. Chances are, at one time or another, an animal suffered in order to put that product on the shelf. It takes hundreds of animals being subjected to unnecessary tests in order for one single drug to be considered safe. While some people will argue that these tests are necessary, the reality is, it is cruel and inhumane to experiment on animals when there are …show more content…
Various States have regulations regarding the treatment of animals, yet the only Federal law in the United States that protects animals is the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). The AWA was established to ensure that some breeds of animals were provided a certain level of care when those animals were to be used for research or be around the public. Unfortunately, not all animals are protected under that law. The majority of animals used in experiments are mice, rabbits and birds, and those animals are not protected under the AWA. These animals are being intentionally poisoned, blinded and killed every year in order to test cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and household cleaners. Many times, the results from these tests are inaccurate which makes the testing unnecessary. In an article written by PETA, the largest animal rights organization in the world, “Even if a product harms animals, it can still be marketed to consumers.” (“PETA Makes Its Case Against Animal Testing” 3). So, what is the point in putting an animal through the torture if the product is going to be marketed regardless of the research

Animal testing has been used in the advancement of medicine, cosmetics and household products since the 19th century. Since that time there have been more than 100 million animal deaths each year and millions more are commonly subjected to force feeding, prolonged periods of physical restraint, neck breaking and decapitation due to animal experimentations (PETA 3). Even after recognition that animal testing seldom provides accurate results in human beings, the torture and speciesism continues. The suffering of animals caused by biomedical and cosmetic research can not be morally justified. We as moral agents have an obligation to protect and reduce harm to all sentient beings.…

Animal testing is not only harmful to the animals, but cruel. In the article Results from Research on Animals Are Not Valid When Applied to Humans, it says, “animals in laboratories are frequently treated as objects that can be manipulated at will, with little value for their lives beyond the cost of purchase.” this shows that the animals that are being tested are treated with disrespect, and are not properly cared for. Another reason that it is cruel is that “In most cases, researchers attempt to minimize the pain and distress experienced by animals in laboratories, but suffering is nonetheless inherent as animals are held in sterile, isolated cages, forced to suffer disease and injury, or euthanised at the end of the study.” as stated in the same…

Few examples exist that truly show how cruel people can be, and animal testing is high on the list. Imagine a beloved animal, caged in stainless steel, shaking, being analyzed for the effects of a new ingredient in a beauty product. Millions are drawn to protest the tests conducted for vanity, and some countries have already placed laws in action to ban the practice. The fight continues in the U.S. for the welfare of animals that are still undergoing vile tests so that people can have cosmetic products. The cry for justice grows louder as new technology allows far more accurate testing to be conducted, without ever involving innocent animals that will live out their lives and likely die in the laboratories, often as a result of the tests.…

Many companies use animals to test products they are about to release, putting the lives of many animals in jeopardy. Millions of animals are forced into painful methods of testing in laboratories that result in physical and psychological damage to the subjects. Animal testing must end and in its place should be methods that are less harmful and more healthy. Although animal testing has led to new cures in the medical industry, the practice is cruel and inhumane with many of the animals being victims of burns, wounds, dehydration, and even death. An example of this cruelty is by a statistic from PETA that over “100 million animals suffer and die in the U.S. every year in cruel chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests,”.…

Though I concede that in some situations, animal testing may be useful, such as in immensely important medical studies, I still maintain that it is unnecessary to make an animal suffer and be discriminated against. Although some people may think that animal testing is healthy and beneficial to humans, I believe that animal testing is unethical and utterly wrong because of the unfair repulsive treatment that animals receive from scientists. This topic is important because the world we live in is as much an animal 's world as it is a human’s world and right now humans are discriminating and enslaving…
