“The Creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which” George Orwell, Animal Farm. Animal Farm is an award winning novel that starts with characters that are animals and humans but in the end you don 't know who is an animal and who is a human. This is much like the ending of Life of Pi. You read 300 pages reading about how this amazing man Piscine Molitor Patel survived being on a lifeboat with an adult Bengal tiger, Richard Parker, as well as a hyena, zebra, and orangutan; not to mention being surrounded by hundreds of sharks at all times. Then in the last ten pages, as Piscine, better known as Pi, is telling his story to two Japanese men who are interviewing him the men tell him that they want a story with no animals. So Pi does just that. Pi retells his entire story switching every animal out for human. It ends abruptly and the reader has no idea which story to believe. Pi tells his second story as if he was Richard Parker, his mother was the orangutang, the chef is the hyena, and the sailor is the zebra. The author, Yann Martel, cleverly makes the book seem real and he draws you in with phrases like, “This story has a happy ending.” (93) and “I have a story that will make you believe in God.” (authors note). Martel puts in sentences in a well crafted way that is unlike every fiction you 've ever read. He makes the book feel like a nonfiction novel.
