Life of Pi
Life sometimes can be very awful and ugly, it is important to have the will to live because it is what keep you going in life. In the book “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel, a young teenager named Piscine whom the author called Pi, faced a dramatic accident in his life. While migrating to Canada with his family, his ship sank with an unexplainable cause, killing his whole family. Pi was left in a lifeboat with a hyena, orangutan and an adult Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Both the hyena and orangutan did not survive, they died. Leaving Pi alone in a lifeboat with Richard Parker stranded in the middle of the ocean. Pi struggled a lot through his journey, his fear is one of the main reasons to make him feel like he is hopeless. One of the examples would be when Pi had to give up his vegetarianism. Pi was stranded in the middle of the ocean, so there wouldn't be any vegetarian option. Pi was forced to eat turtle and fish in order to survive, which something a vegetarian wouldn't do. Giving up his vegetarianism isn't something easy to let go. Being a vegetarian is very important to Pi, it is not only part of his religious practices, but it's something that has become part of him. He lived all his life being a vegetarian. Giving up something that had been part of him for the sake of surviving surely shows the main idea of Pi having the willingness to live. To compare this in Pi’s first story when he told the reporter. Pi mentioned about how the Orangutan named Orange Juice suddenly became violent, trying to fight his hateful opponent which was the Hyena. This also shows that Orange Juice had to do something he would never have done before which was to give up his peacefulness to fight for his life with the
