Copper Sun by Sharon Draper is an emotional story. The story is about Amari, a teenage
African girl who is kidnapped by slave traders. Amari was put into slavery and forced to work on
a rice plantation, but she fought her way out. She was taken from her village and sold to the
highest bidder. The only thing Amari hopes for is survival. Amari experiences many different
emotions during her journey. The two most powerful emotions are fear and sadness. One day, strangers from another village visited Amari’s village. The chief, Amari’s dad,
welcomed them with wine and prayers. They had a big celebration. The chief told stories, they
danced and played drums. All of a sudden, big explosions started to happen. There was cries of horror coming from everywhere. “The chief had fallen off his seat, a huge red bleeding hole in the center of his chest”. The people from the other village, known as the Ashanti’s, shot the chief. Amari watched an Ashanti grab her mother. Her father tried to go help but he got stabbed. “She turned her head and followed, in slow motion it seemed, her father’s bellows of rage as he leaped toward her mother to rescue her. But before he even reached her, one of the milk-faced men thrust a knife into his stomach, and Komla fell silently to the earth”. Amaria’s mom tried to run to him but one of the Ashantis pushed her to the ground. Her mother’s had smashed against a rock and died. After a while she started looking for her little brother Kwasi. He seen her and they both started to run together, suddenly he was sliced by a spear and he died as well. Later she was grabbed by an Ashanti. “Her arms were wrenched behind her, and iron shackles with heavy, rusty chains between them were snapped onto her wrists, holding, there.” When Amari was first put on the ship, she was scared of …show more content…
She felt heartbroken and didn’t know why the
Ashanti people did that. “One moment they were leaping over a fallen log, and the next moment
she heard Kwasi moan softly, then his hand slipped slowly from hers. A spear had sliced through
his whole little body”. The reason Amari felt sad was because her little brother died in her hands.
After they killed Kwasi she didn’t care about anything, so she lost hope.“The following night
Amari was taken by two sailors. They took turns. She wanted to die.” Amari felt sad because her
dreams were finally and forever destroyed. Amari was filled with shame and just wanted to die.
My whole thought on the story is that it was very informing, interesting, but i didn’t like
the book but at the same time i did . I didn’t like the book because it was based on slavery which
a was very cruel and ignorant time. The story was mainly based on african americans who were
kidnapped, murdered, beaten and raped. I liked the book because I like to read books that are
actually based on something that really happened. Sharon Draper made every detail of the book
seem so real. The book got better to me towards the end when Amari finally had freedom
