The title of this book is Copper Sun, by Sharon M. Draper it has 302 pages of historical fiction, it took place in 1700, Ziavi, Africa, South Carolina Colony. This book follows a 15- year old Amari from her capture through her escape to freedom. Through the many trials the characters face, it shows the horror of slavery and how they develop friendships while trying to survive.
In this book it contains plenty of characters. The main characters in the book copper sun are Amari, Polly, Teenie, Tidbit, Mr. Derby, Isabelle, and Clay. Amari is the main character of the book. She is fifth-teen and is dark skinned. She is a slave that works for Derbyshire farms. Her village was invaded and she was taken away from her family and sold into slavery. She

When white men enter her village for the first time, her people welcome them with open arms, but the men are here for the violence. The white men shoot and kill most of Amari's village, including Amari’s parents and her younger brother, Kwasi before setting it aflame. The nightmare continues as Amari and the other young people find themselves chained together and forced to walk for days. At the coast, Amari views the ocean for the first time and most of her friends for the last time. Packed tightly into ships, Amari's people faced conditions: hunger, thirst, sickness, lying in their own waste, and rape. More die and are tossed overboard, but Amari survives with encouragement from a woman named Afi, Afi who helped her tremendously and eventually gave her the hope and courage to survive. When they finally reached Sullivan’s Island, Amari, along with other slaves, were examined by men who “checked every bone and muscle of their naked bodies.” Apon the arrival in America, the women were stripped naked and had tight shakles on their ankles, soon Amari spots Polly, a poor white girl about Amari’s age indentured to the same rice grow. Polly seemed to be the only person not interested in the slave sale. Amari is sold to Mr. Derby. Mr. Derby bought Amari for his 16 year old as a birthday present.
