I have purchased Saint Sebastian Tended by Irene because upon first view it made me think back to earlier paintings of Mary helping Jesus. St. Irene is comforting St. Sebastian as he his slumped over while she and her servant help him.

St. Sebastian is near death in this painting with a grayish green appearance of his skin as he sits upon his red and gold brocade of some type of clothing. The lighting effects direct your eyes to the subject and not the background by using Caravaggio’s style.

Brugghen captures the muscular strong body of the saint as he is tied up to a tree. You will notice that St. Irene attempts to delicately remove the arrow from St. Sebastian’s back, using only her thumb, index and middle finger. There is a servant
