Register to read the introduction… The Inner Circle refers to countries traditionally regarded as the bases of English, that is, nations where English is the mother tongue of a substantial part of the population and the main language of practically every sphere of life (Jindapitak and Teo, 2013). Countries in this circle include, among others, the United Kindgom and The United States. The Outer Circle, in contrast, comprises former colonies of the just mentioned nations which have institutionalised non-native varieties of English, for example India and Nigeria. In these states, English often holds an important position in adiministrative and educational matters, despite not being the major first language (Matsuda, 2012). Finally, the Expanding Circle consists of countries where the functions of English are more restricted than in previous groups. In fact, English does not play any official role in domestic institutions and its daily use is limited to specific contexts such as tourism and business. Assuming Kachru’s Concentric Circles Model as framework and focusing on countries belonging to the Expanding Circle, this essay has suggested that ELT practices should be reconceptualized. In particular, it has argued for the implementation of ELF pedagogies in the peripheral circle, for these models reflect the actual situation of English more accurately and, most importantly, they are more consistent than native-centered ones with the role English plays in Expanding-Circle countries. Nonetheless, it must be acknowledged that this essay has studied the issue from a theoretical viewpoint and, therefore, it remains to be empirically demonstrated whether ELF methodologies would actually prove to be
