Twenty five strangers sit in a room together with the purpose of learning a difficult subject. Is the best way to do this with a lecture? There is a problem with communication in college. Every student learns differently, but research has shown that when students are more involved and participate grades are remarkably better. To some professors warming up the classroom is seen as time wasting others. However, getting the majority to understand developing a level of comfort is one of the key elements in reaching out to students. Time and awkwardness should not hold up students from communicating more openly in class with one other because it can lead to good academic standing and develop both stronger social and critical thinking skills.

The University of Washington has noticed this and uses techniques like question and answer sections during and after lectures while also doing both making sure to add visual and hands on activities. For some students not wanting to do anything more than listen and reiterate the material. Now, for example art students in a math class may feel this situation stronger than psych majors in a sociology class. But even for more left brain thinkers, this can be a good way of exercising a new or deeper understanding. Teachers should have more training and should seek out to bring in the class more.
When does interaction stop in the classroom? High school classes go on with a consistent 45 minute section while college classes break between a day or more days. College classrooms have an entirely different culture and setting. There is no time to develop that level of comfort or familiarity for students to get more involved in the classroom. Right around that restless age where you no longer get recess and are forced to sit not all professors are social butterflies or even care to do anything than present the
