In America today, especially among millennials, certain words and subject material have become offensive and require trigger warnings. One subject that many say requires a trigger warning is racially charged speech. In fact, a poll taken by the First Amendment Center showed that less than half of those polled said, “speech that offends racial sensibilities should be protected” (Morrissey). That means over half of Americans believe speech should be limited in fear that it would offend someone. Most of these people would believe that trigger warnings are necessary for the protection of people’s dignity. Many believe that, “If words are upsetting, people would rather the government or some other authority made the speaker shut up” (“Under Attack.”). This is the belief of the millennials who would like trigger warnings for offensive content, which isn’t what they were intended for. They were initially used to warn people with PTSD of content that might trigger a flashback. A large portion of America is in favor of limiting free speech so that they won’t be offended. This problem is the same one that President-Elect Donald Trump faced during his campaign; everyone complained that what he said was offensive. It was run from 1976 until 2008 by President Fidel Castro. Castro was a member of the communist party. In order to keep other political out of the minds of the citizens, any speech that was not conforming to “the aim of a socialist society” (@FreedomHouseDC). People who do not follow this law can even be sentenced to death. The government also controls all sources of media in the country. This means that anything the government doesn’t want the people to know will be kept a secret. Not only does the government control the media, they also control the internet. While 23 percent of Cubans in 2011 accessed the internet, only a few sites were accessible due to censorship by the government. The internet is also very expensive to use, costing about $1.50 per hour to use the Cuban intranet, or $7.00 per hour to use the international network. With the average salary being $20.00 per month, this only gives the elite members of society access to very limited view points from other people. This lack of information given to the citizens causes them to have very limited outlooks on their situations, which in turn causes them to follow blindly. Americans do this as well. Many get their news from one source which has a very strong bias. The bias gives them only one opinion, keeping their outlook on the situation very limited. The best way to fight the lack of information is for the people to change
