With all the given cures and medical strategies in the twenty-first century, why do some people prefer alternative methods? In recent history, there have been some outstanding results in certain medical practices, but current technology deems them irreverent or “not useful” in today 's society. There are people around the world that still believe these are more helpful than the newest medicinal methods. The practices follow under the categories of integrative health, complementary medicine, and CAM research.
About thirty percent of Americans today use health care approaches created outside of the mainstream or conventional medicine. When classifying these approaches, people often say "alternative" and "complementary" as they are the same thing, but these terms indicate different views: "complementary" is considered a non-mainstream practice used together with conventional medicine. "Alternative" is considered a non-mainstream practice used in place of conventional medicine.
Standard medical care is the medicine that is practiced by health professionals who hold an M.D. or D.O. degree. It is also practiced by other health professionals, such as physical therapists, physician assistants, psychologists, and registered nurses. Standard medicine may also be called western, mainstream, orthodox, or regular medicine. Some standard medical care practitioners are also practitioners of CAM.
