During this paper, I will be informing the reader of the many different types of addiction, addictive behaviors, treatment options available for addiction, and how addiction impacts the lives of the victim and their family. Ten percent of all adults in the United States consider themselves to be in recovery from a drug and/or alcohol abuse problem (Feliz, 2012). According to an article in Psychology Today, ” Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that can be pleasurable but the continued use/act of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary life responsibilities, such as work, relationships, or health” (Jaffe, n.d.). This paper will explain the many different types of addiction, the behaviors that addicts show, treatment options for people struggling with addiction, and how addiction impacts the lives of the victim and the victim’s family and friends. Addiction can be a life consuming affliction, but with hard work and plenty of support, anyone can beat this condition.
There are two types of addiction: substance and behavioral. Behavioral addictions are those that are not involving a substance, rather these involve being addicted to committing an act or process.
