Another strength of the adaptive leadership style is flexibility. In my Seven Habits assessment I scored high in category 8: Synergize, which emphasized valuing and seeking insights and opinions of others in order to find a creative solution. In my role, rarely am I able to rely on a past decision and apply it to the current situation. There are always extenuating circumstances that need to be considered and that influence the decision making process. I find myself often having to find unique options to a situation, present them in a way that different cultures and personalities can relate to, and then work together to decide the path forward. This out-of-the-box thinking is what makes my job the most interesting. As we develop cutting edge technology, there are new developments each day, and being flexible to incorporate them will be our key to success. I can outline a situation within the context of the big picture, and then lead a team down my thought process to the available options. This skillset is both a strength and weakness of my leadership style. On the one hand, it enables a quick time to resolution in a lot of cases. On the other hand, my challenge is to ensure the team members keep up with the conversation and have a voice in the ultimate decision, especially if I feel strongly that my preferred outcome is the optimum solution.
