People struggle to determine the acceptability of torture. Each one has his opinion regarding torture depending on his point of view. Sometimes the importance of information outweighs the importance of morals. Therefore, it is important to put aside morals and sympathy especially in situations where thousands of innocent lives are at stake. Torture can be used to realize valuable information that could help avert an atrocity. If a terrorist who has planted a bomb and a jumbo jet is the only one who can disarm it, he may be subjected to torture to give information that can help in disarming the bomb. Therefore, torture is necessary at times for saving lives and property especially if the terrorist can give information that can help to avert an imminent act of terror. A terrorist possesses information that could help a lot. If applied correctly, torture can work quickly and effectively because it outwits the detainee because he is not able to resist. Justifying torture is the same as justifying self-defense. The right to self-defense is inviolable, and it extends to the defense of another. It may be true to assert that torture does not go against the morals of the society because it is worth the temporary pain to the detainee to save many lives. Torture is, therefore, a necessary tactic for thwarting potential terrorist attacks. Torture may be barbaric, but mass murder is far more barbaric. Furthermore, it is often argued that it would have been worth assassinating Hitler in 1943 as it would have shortened that war and saved millions of lives.
