A surgical abortion is a procedure in which a suction device is inserted into a woman’s uterus and the contents within are then removed. The suction device rips off each of the baby’s appendages and the rest of the body is removed afterward. When a surgical abortion is performed later in a pregnancy, usually during the second trimester, it is called dilation and evacuation, or D&E. In a medical abortion, the second most common abortion procedure, a specific medication is provided by a doctor. These medications are commonly mifepristone and misoprostol (). This is usually what someone will do when they have an unplanned pregnancy and want to end it before they get too far along. This is a quick and somewhat easy way for women to escape a lifetime commitment of parenthood. These medications are used most commonly in the first seven to nine weeks of a pregnancy (). When the woman takes the pills, she induces an abortion in her body. Abortions were first created around 1550 BC. An Egyptian medical text suggested that if there was a plant fiber covered in honey and crushed dates inserted into a woman’s uterus, an abortion could be induced. An alternative to a deadly abortion is adoption. There are so many parents and couples that wish they could conceive a child of their own but are unable to. Many of the children that could have been adopted are commonly aborted before the option is even considered. Keith Riler said in his article on July 9, 2012 that “there are up to thirty-six couples waiting for every one baby placed for adoption” (). This fact is startling with the fact that there are so many families and parents wanting to adopt the children but so many are aborted without the consideration of an abortion.
