Federal Government Should Outlaw Late-Term Abortion

In 2013, reporter Sarah Terzo from Live Action News in Virginia indicated that late-term abortion clinic shoots babies through the heart with poison in order to kill them. This example is a good reason to why the federal government should be outlawing late-term abortion. No matter what situation the mother and fetus are in, every fetus should have the right to live a meaningful life. However, the federal government should outlaw abortion after the first trimester because many of the practices are inhumane, all fetuses should have the right to live, and the ways abortion can cause risks for the women.

Every unborn child should have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in the second and third trimester. In 2010, research shows that states indicated that unborn children are considered humans under tort, property and criminal law (Roden, 2010). By these laws shown, a mother shouldn’t get to choose whether the fetus lives or dies. The unborn child is its own person and by a mother aborting her own child should be considered murder. Under law a child is supposed to be born for many different reasons, including being capable of having a legacy (Roden, 2010).

Not only will the fetus feel pain after a first trimester abortion, but at 25 weeks the fetus is considered viable (Candisky, 2015). When a fetus is considered feasible it is said to say that when the child is born there is a high percentage of the infant being able to survive (Candisky, 2015). This shows that late-term abortion is considered wrong, under them having the right to life, because you shouldn’t be able to abort an unborn child with such a high percentage of them

An example of a risk a late-term abortion can have on the mother is the increase of getting breast cancer (Lanfranchi, 2014). This is shown to happen because the mothers breast have not matured fully, which causes more susceptible breast tissue than before the pregnancy (Lanfranchi, 2014). With knowing the high percentage of possibly getting breast cancer, no mother should follow through with late-term abortion. “Hormonal contraceptives increase breast cancer risk by their proliferative effect on breast tissue and their direct carcinogenic effects on DNA” (Lanfanchi, 2014). Therefore, the increased amount of immature breast tissue will give the mother more sites for cancer initiation, giving her a higher risk of getting breast cancer in the future (Lanfranchi,

The Supreme Court has recognized that “viability varies among pregnancies and that improvements in medical technology will advance earlier in gestation at the point of fetal viability.” (Pieklo) Technology is always evolving, and babies are able to survive longer and longer outside of the womb when not full-term. Late-term abortion will soon become legalized murder if the law is not changed. It was and still is common practice for late term abortion, specifically Tiller’s office, to make an injection directly into the fetus with a substance termed digoxin to “expire” the baby painlessly. It is said to cause a painless heart attack, yet those who have experienced major heart attacks claim them to be rather frightening and extremely painful.…

Any woman that has ever had a late-term abortion knowingly and willingly committed fetal homicide. According to Dr. Jen Gunter, an OB/GYN and a pain medicine physician, "1,186 late-term abortions were conducted in 2012" (Gunter). That equals 1,186 lives that were ripped from this world... futures stripped from human beings. Although a fetus may not be a life since it relies on a host to survive, late-term abortion should be made illegal because the fetus can feel the pain of the D&X procedure, the D&X procedure is harmful to the mother, and women are using abortion as a form of birth control rather than a form of termination in a time of crisis.…

If a fetus is able to survive on its own, it should be treated like a human being, and should be given a fair opportunity to live. Performing an abortion during the third trimester unjustly takes the life of a defenseless human being. I agree with pro-life advocates that the dignity of a viable fetus’ life should be respected because a premature-born baby can survive on its own during the third trimester. Therefore, the restriction on abortions during the third trimester of a pregnancy, which is part of the Roe v. Wade decision, is completely justifiable. However, I do not agree with restrictions on abortions prior to the fetus being able to exist on its…

In terms of life and death, the government has no say. Abortion is already a taxing ordeal on the mother and her family, and forcing them to choose the baby over the mother isn’t fair. A fetus isn’t sentient while it’s in the womb, and claiming otherwise shows a lack of understanding of how life works. Because of these reasons, the choice of a late term abortion is a decision that should be made by the mother, and her alone.…

Women have abortions because carrying the baby could result in death of the mother and the baby. Carrying a child to give birth has a higher risk of death rather than having an abortion. The risk of dying from an abortion is a 0.6 chance in 100,000: whereas the risk of dying from carrying a child to birth is a 9 in 100,000 chance. Many argue cancer and infertility are a result of having an abortion. The National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist states the abortion cannot lead to the higher chance of breast cancer.…

Terminating a pregnancy is cruel at any stage of development, and a baby's life deserves protection. A whopping 92% of abortions in America were done on healthy women to end the lives of healthy children ("The Best Pro-Life Arguments"). Many women don’t have a legitimate reason for having an abortion. In the end, families don’t have to keep the baby if they don’t want to. They could put the baby up for adoption.…

A theory about religion is that life starts at conception. People with other beliefs should not be forced to abide by this certain theory. Legal abortion today states that human life starts at birth, but when a baby is born, it grows and develops into a teenager, then a mature adult, until it finally becomes old and dies. Humans are made to develop and change, so a human becomes a human during conception.…

Many people think that an unborn baby is just a useless clump of cells which can be thrown away with the trash this, however is not true. A person is a person from the moment of their conception. Unborn babies are little humans, too small to even speak for themselves, that should be loved and have the same rights as humans that have been born. An unborn baby’s heartbeat can be heard 8 weeks after conception, and have unique fingerprints 14 weeks after conception. The very idea that an unborn human is not a human is absurd.…
