In today's society, there are many conflicting opinions on the topic of abortion. Despite being legalized in 1973, abortion has remained a polarizing issue to society ("Introduction to Abortion..." 1 of 4). While half of society supports the belief that abortion should be illegal, the other half follow the opposing notion that abortion should remain legal. Through millions of pregnancies that occur every year, one can infer that not all are intentional. In fact, approximately 86 million women had unintended pregnancies in 2008 ("Safe and Legal Abortion..." 1 of 10). Despite unplanned pregnancy rates being so high, restrictions on abortion are steadily increasing. In 2012, the second highest number of abortion restrictions passed in one year …show more content…
With the availability of these procedures decreasing, research about how restrictions on abortion effect women is increasing. The Human Rights Committee has recognized that "denying women access to legal abortion services is an arbitrary interference in their private lives..." ("Safe and Legal Abortion..." 4 of 10). Controversy around the topic can blur one's judgement on abortion, but there are points that clarify the support around the topic. Legal abortion is a very safe procedure. Legal abortion allows women to exercise their right to choose whether or not to have an abortion based on their personal situation. Abortion can not be justified by one's personal right to choose. Choice is not an accurate directing of right or wrong. One's choice is "not made in light of scientific and moral realities" ("The Rights of..." 4 of 10). One's right to choose does not justify killing a baby before it is born. When asked the question "who should make the choice to kill preborn babies?" the answer is nobody (Brown 1 of 7). A fetus is an innocent life and innocent life should not be murdered. The death of innocent "should always be the result of 'natural causes' not direct human intervention of destructive intent" (Brown, 1 of 7). Killing a preborn baby should not remain legal. Although a woman facing unplanned pregnancy may be experiencing challenges, her desire for a certain way of life does not condone killing an innocent life. One person's "right to preferred lifestyle is not greater than another person's right to life" ("The Rights of..." 1 of 10). Legal abortion encourages the value of coveted lifestyle over innocent life. Abortion should not be justified. Killing a "preborn baby is not, and never can be, a positive response to any situation" (Brown 3 of 7). Abortion should not remain legal because women should not be able to choose whether or not an abortion is the best possible choice for them. Abortion is never the best
