Data from the SIPP survey approximates that there are 10,000,000 persons who are considered hard of hearing and approximately 1,000,000 are functionally deaf (Mitchell, 2005). According to Patricia Roberts (1998), she stated members of the population does not agree with calling themselves ‘hearing impaired,’ because it insinuates that their “eyes are broken.” It is more appropriate for people to refer to the population as “ Deaf and hard of hearing” (Roberts, 1998). Individuals who are referred to autism specialty clinics present such diverse symptoms as can only be attributed to the full spectrum of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The fact that there is no homogeneity in ASD means that physicians usually have to contend with utilizing a complicated process to identify those individuals who are on the spectrum. There is a wide range of professional support services for people with additional support needs. An important one is social workers; they help people with their problems and look after their welfare. This proves essential for people with additional support needs particularly children and young adults who need extra support. Whilst working with the individuals and families they also "serve as liaisons between different institutions to assist patients and collaborate with other health professionals" (MSW). Matt is a 5 year old autistic male, who lives with his parents and older brother in Toronto. He was diagnosed at three with Autism Spectrum Disorder; he is nonverbal and communicates through PECS and is presently learning to sign. The assessment provided the family and intervention team information critical for setting goals for Matt. Matt’s mother is still having difficulty accepting that her son has Autism, but is willing to do anything to help him in any way that she can.
