After the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act was signed in 2011, criminal inquiries related to food safety have been called to increased attention. For example, in 2014, a man was sent to spend 28 years in prison for knowingly sending out jars of peanut butter with salmonella and attempting to cover it up. Chipotle is now under investigation for a norovirus incident in one of their restaurants. Chipotle has had E. coli outbreaks in multiple states, and the chain temporarily closed 43 restaurants in Washington and Oregon after numerous cases were linked to their stores. Not long after, Boston College had over 100 students contract a norovirus from a Chipotle restaurant. The number of people affected is growing, and it is showing up all over the United States. I knew that Chipotle has had issues with the FDA, but I did not know the extent of the problem. This article has opened my eyes to the dangers of eating at a Chipotle, because of the risk of illness. Chipotle has been responsible for hundreds of people getting sick, and the FDA is doing an investigation. Until that is over and fixed, I will be staying away from their
