In the very first chapter of the Bible water is mentioned. Genesis 1:2 describes “the earth… formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Before anything else, water was the only thing existing on earth, validating its importance to the earth and mankind. Water is so important that it is referenced over 722 times in the Bible. All living creature’s depend on water to survive, since their mass is made up of 70-90% water. The continuous movement of water above and below the surface is the water cycle and is described in Job 36:27-28, when God “draws up the drops of water, which distill as rain to the streams, the clouds pour down their moisture and abundant showers fall on mankind.” Water is not only a liquid, but can exist in three distinct forms: liquid, solid, and gas/vapor, all of which are referenced in the Bible and can be seen in the water cycle.
The study of the water cycle did not officially begin until Bernard Palissy proved the theory in 1580. The first phase of the water cycle is evaporation. Evaporation is the process by which particles escape from the surface of a non-boiling liquid and enter the gas state. The source of evaporation is rivers, lakes, and oceans, which cover about 75% of the earth’s surface. God’s word describes this in Jeremiah 51:16 “When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. He sends lightning with the rain…
