This particular river likely represents the serenity and simplicity of life in Apurba’s hometown as compared to the lively activity of Calcutta where Apurba attended school. Apurba spoke of the river after the monsoon season, and how it grows wider and flows faster, but eventually returns back to a calm flow. This is paralleled in Mrinmayi’s character. She begins the story happy and satisfied with her life, much like the calm river. The rainy season would represent Apurba taking Mrinmayi as his wife and how stressful her life becomes as a result. The two, who are both already married, fall for each other. The relevance of the two meeting on the coast represents the unpredictability of love and relationships. Oceans are strong bodies that dominate and overtake any obstacles in their way, which is also paralleled through Anna and Gurov’s relationship. Both of them are willing to let their love conquer any difficulties that they encounter with their families or social standards. Before Anna and Gurov parted, they would listen to the gentle waves of the ocean. This served as a place where the two could go to leave any sadness or doubt behind helping them move forward in their relationship.
Oceans are also featured in Candide. During his travels, Candide has many encounters with both oceans and rivers. The presence of water signifies Candide’s thirst for adventure and hope that he will be reunited with his love. The unpredictability of oceans is a significant parallel to Candide’s journey.
