To graduate high school a student has to pass a standardized state test. As talked about previously, George is not good at taking tests. He struggles at school because of the tests and can not keep his grades up. On the bright side George obtains a job and is very successful at it. He begins to like to read about cars in magazines, but the reading classes do not allow him to read those. The classes are strictly reading materials to prepare for the test again. George does not pass, again, so he starts to skip his reading classes.
George has one more chance to try and pass the test to graduate. He is a solid C student and has enough credits to graduate, but he gets the test scores back and he fails by three points. No matter how well he actually did at school does not matter because he can not get his diploma. George needed the diploma to get a better job. George can not get anywhere without passing high school. George’s whole life illustrates how standardized tests are not effective in schools. School is becoming this way for many students because of the standardized state tests. Schools should go based on credits, not just if you can pass a test. To some kids those tests really do mean the rest of their careers. Standardized tests are not an effective way to measure intelligence because they only look at one grade, not the whole report card. George is never given a chance to show his real intelligence so he repeatedly
