Cluster B Personality Disorders
Personality disorders are a group of mental illnesses that involve long term patterns of thoughts and behaviors that are unhealthy and have been known to cause serious problems with relationships, work, and activities. People with personality disorders may not even realize they have a problem, in fact, their thoughts can seem completely normal to them. Because personality forms during childhood through an individual 's genes and environment, a personality disorder usually begins during the teenage years or early adulthood. There are ten existing personality disorders that have been grouped into three “clusters” A, B, and C based on their characteristics. Cluster B personality disorders are characterized by dramatic, overly emotional or unpredictable thinking or behavior and includes antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic personality disorders. The cause of personality disorders is a mystery. Many researchers believe that a person’s genes could be a cause, they are currently looking for genetic links to aggression, anxiety, and fear. Childhood trauma could also be an underlying cause of a personality disorder; one study found that people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder also had high rates of childhood sexual trauma.
