Science and literacy are essential at present, as we live in an information-saturated society that is dominated by media and news reports (Alexander et al, 2008). Therefore, it is important for children to learn the skills to access this information, hence why the bone activity comprises of a mixture of both, to learn the conventions for reporting experiments and data handling. Alexander et al (2008) deem this as a worthwhile task, as it incorporates purposeful literacy writing within the theme. However, they explicitly state that children must be aware that it is being delivered in an interdisciplinary approach, in order to see how writing can be used within other areas. Having a clear purpose for writing encourages and engages all children, particularly children with English as an additional language, as they have a clear aim to work towards (Kenner and Kress, 2000). The clear purpose within my theme (shown in Appendix 1) is the final product of a report, which shows the children’s approach and findings of their learning. A written report is thought to be the appropriate way to deliver findings, however some children find this a rather challenging task as it is not a common genre explored in schools (Bucknall, 2012).
In order for children to achieve the National Curriculum statement ‘Identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own’ (DfE, 2013; 47), they must be exposed to a…
