Throughout my yearlong child study, I was given the opportunity to work very closely with a first grade class at East Rock Community Magnet School. The purpose of this study was to understand how students of different developmental levels could interact in the same classroom. The student that I have chosen to work with is a high achieving student in this class; however, many of the other students in the class are working below grade level and are not at the same level of social or emotional development. As a future New Haven teacher, I want to understand how to effectively instruct different students and ensure that all students are receiving a quality education. Before beginning this study, I predicted that in mixed ability classroom,…

In the EYFS it states that to promote learning and development children must have themselves being their own unique child, positive relationships and an enabling environment. Within positive relationships there are many aspects that a teacher or practitioner could follow to promote positive relationships between the children in the setting. For example, this could be the activity that the children will be playing. If the teacher plans an activity that all the children in the class will enjoy then this will promote relationship building, communication and language development and will also encourage team work between the children in the class. Teachers should encourage children to learn together and to learn from eachother.…

Most people imagine a teacher as someone who is in their late 30’s or older teaching in a classroom. Many lessons are taught in the classroom, but many more lessons are taught outside of the classroom. My cousin Keisha and her daughter, KaLeiah, have been the greatest teachers I ever have had in my life. KaLeiah is a three-year old, a tall, lean, energetic little girl with beautiful light brown skin, just like her mother. She has dark black afro hair, and mix of shades of brown eyes, which has filled me with the will to open my heart and mind to the world.…

Reflecting on journal entry’s two readings for our course, I was compelled by three ideas in Worth and Grollman’s (2003) book. The first idea that captured my attention was about the “Young Children’s Inquiry” (YCI) framework. According to the Worth and Grollman (2003), the process of exploring and investigating the world is not a one-dimensional experience but rather it is a multidimensional experience (p. 19). Worth and Grollman offer that children in the classroom develop inquiry skills in different stages and usage order varies constantly. As a result, Worth and Grollman argue educators need to “record observations, explanations, and ideas through multiple forms of representation including drawings, simple graphs, writing, and movement” (p.18) when doing scientific inquiry in order to give children opportunities to develop their abilities and skills.…

The primary classroom is an environment which is constantly being debated and changed. The one constant throughout my teaching career has been the diversity of the students academically, socially, and economically. It is important each student feels they contribute to the conversation, and their input is valued and respected. When I meet with children in a small group, we not only talk about the skill we are trying to master, but we take time to discuss important or not so important events in their lives.…

Professionalism is the competence expected and presented by a professional, and among teachers it is important to exhibit professionalism in their careers. Presenting oneself as a professional is important as it will affect their career. A teacher not presenting themselves as a professional can result in students not showing respect towards them, their colleagues not taking them seriously, parents being concerned with their child’s learning, and the certainty of putting a career at risk. Teachers must know how to present themselves with different groups of people, and fully know the roles they must take with these different types of groups. They should present themselves as nurturing yet firm with their students while keeping their boundaries…

Reflecting on my educational experiences, I appreciate the immeasurable impact that teachers make on the lives of young people. I also realise that the skills and knowledge acquired in the classroom, will be used by young people throughout life. Therefore, as a teacher, I hope to be a role model that cultivates in young people, open minds, the knowledge and ability to look at the world critically, and the belief in ones capacity to make positive contributions to society. With this goal in mind, I am applying for the School Direct Training Programme. We design our lessons so that our students learn from every experience. As the director of ABC Preschool, it is my responsibility to ensure that our program’s mission and vision are reflected in our curriculum which includes meaningful experiences in the content areas of language and literacy, math and science, social studies, art, music, drama, movement, and technology (Freeman, Decker, & Decker, 2013). Along with my staff, many hours are spent making sure that we follow developmentally appropriate practice so as to meet young children where they are developmentally and help each child meet challenging and achievable learning goals through activities that promote active engagement and learning (Freeman, Decker, & Decker, 2013). Assessments that include multiple sources of evidence, especially reports from parents and teachers, are important so as to identify children's skills, abilities, and needs (Deyell-Gingold, 2008). That is why we observe and document children’s learning and analyze our observation notes to identify where more support should be given.…
