The article, “A Randomized Trial of a Low Carbohydrate Diet for Obesity”, by Foster et al. seeks to evaluate the efficacy of a low carbohydrate diet for weight loss. This study was done because despite the fact that a low carbohydrate high-protein high-fat diet is highly popular, no trials or studies have been done to determine its long-term effects. Data from short-term, uncontrolled studies indicate a significant weight loss but there were no studies being done after the 24-week mark.
The introduction and background understudy gave a clear description of the problem and also the need of the study. Also, the use of a randomized controlled study was appropriate and helpful in helping to evaluate the facts of the low carbohydrate, high-protein, high fat (Atkins) diet versus a low-calorie, high carbohydrate, low-fat (conventional) diet on weight loss and obese individuals. The study design of this randomized trial allowed for the researchers to assess the bodyweight outcomes over at one-year time period. The researchers did not formulate any formal research questions nor did they form a hypothesis about the outcome. However, it is quite clear from the background information, that the reader can assume that the long-term effects of this particular diet is highly beneficial overtime.
