Lynda Barry shares a memory in the narrative essay “The Sanctuary of School” (New York Times 2 Jan. 1992). Ms. Barry recalls her unstable home life as a child and how a school became a sanctuary for the 7-year old. In it, Barry details a walk to school and uses the people she encounters along the way to define her sanctuary. Barry uses this personal experience to shed light on the broader issue of art programs fading out of public school budgets and is a plea for the children, like her, who use art as a form of therapy. Lynda Barry’s home life has led her to feel “neglected” and “unnoticed” (Barry 10) Following another night of her parents arguing, Lynda Barry “snuck” (1) out of her home to go to school, in a panic, and in the dark−to avoid…

In our modern days, many families want their children to be doctors and engineers while only some want their children to pursue a career in arts and music. In this article, Stacey Goodman focuses on art careers; she says that many parents don’t want their children to study an art career because they believe that if they study those majors, their children will end up in underemployment, disappointment, and struggle lives. As an artist and educator, she advice students who are interested in the arts to follow it and pursue a career in art in the future instead pursuing a career that their parents want, or because it makes a lot of money. In my twelve years of school, I have had many teachers who left their mark on me. The teacher that has inspired me the most, however, is my eleventh grade art teacher, Mr. Palmer. Art became a hobby of mine over the fall break of my sophomore year; starting with learning to draw cartoons from reference pictures, I worked my way up to being able to freehand my favorite characters without looking at a picture. Many times, I tried to draw in different styles and mediums, but not until I took Mr. Palmer’s class did I truly experience the enormous art world. Mr. Palmer taught me about new artists, trying new styles, and never giving up.…
