The College for Creative Studies we know today was once a studio space for artists to work and develop their ideas. It was called the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts.
Recreating an artist maker space/community center like the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts could really bring hope to a community that may be struggling.
The idea is to build a studio space for artists that will also offers classes with scholarship opportunities to children in the community. Exposing the importance of art to youths can foster a lifelong passion for art
This community art center will offer classes in printmaking, painting, drawing, woodworking, glassblowing, and blacksmithing. This will not only give working artist a chance to further develop their skills, but also other members of the community
One major challenge we will face when opening our business will be capital. Luckily, property is relatively cheap in Detroit, but we will still need to finance the construction of the facility, all of the special equipment that …show more content…
The Knight Foundation funds most of its projects through open challenges. The Knight Arts challenge seeks ideas in cities, including Detroit, that represent their communities. Another challenge the foundation presents is the Knight Cities challenge. The 5 million dollar challenge seeks new ideas from innovators who will take hold of the future. Either of these challenges could help to fund this project. Additional funding will come from people in the community through fundraising opportunities. Members will also pay a membership fee, which will pay for the use of the metal, wood, and glass shops. Finally, artists will be able to rent out their own private studio
