Fasting reveals the things that control us. We are not so much abstaining from food as we are feasting on the word of God. Fasting deepens prayer. People with abundant possession may tend to find fasting difficult to practice, because we have become attached to our possessions and cannot bear the thought of doing without them. (Foster, p. 60, 2000) suggests how to enlarge your ideas about fasting. Ponder to Pray over a particular personality trait of yours, one from which you would like to fast and consider writing in your journal about it. Express your struggles as a dialogue between you and God. Study is the mind taking on an order conforming to the order of whatever we concentrate upon. The discipline of study is important not only books to study books, but also those things around us such as nature, relationships, events and cultural values. The Word should be central in our lives as Christians. The study of scriptures will inform Christians about the danger of idolatry and false doctrines. (Foster, p. 60, 2000) suggests we read different biblical translations to gain a different perspective. For we know all too well from experience how often we fall despite our good intention, but whatever the reasons stemming from deceptions, obstacles, or difficulties that trips us up from directing us to get it right, head knowledge needs the heart.
