I had two very rewarding opportunities that allowed me to learn about the health care system.s.The role of a Patient care Assistant in a post surgical intensive care unit was one of these opportunities. I learned technical skills like acquiring, monitoring and recording vital signs, weight checks, and patient input and output measurements. I also learned nursing skills like turning patients, bathing, bed making, skin care, incontinence care, toileting duties and glucose fingersticks. Being in an ICU I also learn to provide supply, support and assist the medical staff with specific procedures like placing, removing and monitoring foleys, urinary catheters, bulb drains, and nasogastric tubes, amongst other things.
