On September 11, 2001 nineteen militants hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the four planes were flown into the Twin Towers in New York City. In Brooklyn, New York, a thirteen year old girl named Wendy was at school, like any other day, she left home a little aggravated with her parents. When Wendy got word of the attack her perspective on life had changed. Wendy’s mother was in one of the towers and was never found; Wendy, her stepfather, and her little brother still had hope for survival. Even though Josh and Wendy did not always see eye to eye, Josh always had Wendy’s best interest at heart. Josh allowed Wendy to go to California even though Janet did not want her to early on, “I keep thinking maybe I am supposed to stop you, he said. I try to imagine what your mother would have me do. If it was me the way I am used to being …I just don’t feel that sure I can do any better than some guy in California …Maybe it is your best shot getting out of here ”(127-128). Josh wanted Wendy to make the grown up decision to go to California or to stay in New York, with her family. Even though this does not seem like a big deal it was for Wendy, because she was now in control of her life and could make decisions for herself, which allowed her to gain the independence she needed to gain after losing her mother. Also, Josh enabled Wendy to become independent through the clarinet and expressing herself through music and having a unique instrument that made her stand out “You being a more understated kind of person, but I am thinking maybe you are about due to bust out with something a little flashy yourself”(289). Josh wanted her to step out of her comfort zone and experience a new perspective and to not be afraid to stand out and be independent from others. Wendy did step out with the help of Josh and was not afraid to show off her unique clarinet making her independent from others in her
